Gazebo vs Marquee: Which One Should You Buy?
Choose a gazebo for quick shade over a small market stall, sports sideline or compact backyard area. Choose a marquee when you need more covered space, removable walls and room for a party, wedding or event. The right choice depends on crowd size, weather protection and how often you will reuse it.

"Gazebo" and "marquee" get used interchangeably, but they're built for different jobs. Here's the plain-English difference on a gazebo vs a marquee, so you buy the right one, not the one you'll regret on the day.
The short version
- Pop-up gazebo, a concertina frame that springs up in about 60 seconds. Grab-and-go shade for markets, the sideline, a small backyard gathering. Smaller footprint, around 3×3m and 9m² of cover.
- Marquee, a larger framed structure built to shelter a crowd for a party, wedding or event, with side walls included on every size we currently sell. Bigger spans, more weather protection, from 6×3m up to the 10×5m wedding marquee.
Side by side
| Pop-Up Gazebo | Marquee | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Markets, shade, small/quick setups | Parties, weddings, events, bigger crowds |
| Setup | ~60 seconds, one piece | 20-60 min, framed with walls |
| Walls | Optional / minimal | Included on every size we currently sell |
| Typical size | 3×3m (9m²) | 6×3m (18m²) up to 10×5m (50m²) |
| Crowd it covers | ~15 standing / ~10 seated | ~30 up to ~80+ standing |
| Weather | Shade + light rain | Wall it in against wind & rain |
How big a crowd does each cover?
Capacity is the deciding factor for most people. Here's what each footprint actually holds:
- 6×3m marquee, 18m²: about 30 standing, 20 seated, 12 dining.
- 9×3m marquee, 27m²: about 45 standing, 30 seated, 18 dining.
- 6×6m marquee, 36m²: about 60 standing, 40 seated, 24 dining.
- 10×5m wedding marquee, 50m²: about 80+ standing, 55 seated, 33 dining.
Add roughly 25% more space if you want a dance floor, bar or buffet inside. Want it worked out exactly? Run your numbers through our marquee size calculator.
So which do you buy?
Get a gazebo if you need fast, portable shade you'll throw up and pack down often, markets, sport, a small backyard. We don't stock pop-up gazebos, our most compact size is the 6×3m marquee at 18m².
Get a marquee if you're hosting people, a party, a wedding, a function, and want them covered and comfortable. Start at the 6×3m for around 30 standing or 20 seated, step up to the 9×3m or 6×6m marquee for bigger numbers, or go all the way to the 10×5m wedding marquee for the big day.
