Gazebo vs Marquee: Which One Should You Buy?
Buy a pop-up gazebo for quick, light shade; buy a marquee when you need walls and room for guests, which Brisbane Marquee Sales sells from $199 for a 3x3m (9m²) to $2,299 for a 12x7m (84m²). It does not sell pop-up gazebos. Every size currently for sale includes side walls: three on the 3x3m, which two people put up in about 20 minutes, and fully enclosed from the 6x3m ($249, about 30 standing) to the 12x7m (about 140 standing).
The difference between a marquee and a gazebo is the frame and the walls. A pop-up gazebo is a one-piece folding frame that opens in about 60 seconds and shades about 9m². A marquee is built from separate steel or aluminium poles, takes 20 minutes to 4 hours, comes with side walls and covers 9m² to 84m², from $199 to $2,299.
The short version
Marquee vs gazebo: buy a gazebo if you only need quick shade over about 9m², like a market stall or the sideline. Buy a marquee if you are hosting people, because walls and bigger spans, from 9m² to 84m², shelter anything from a small backyard group to about 140 standing guests.

What is the actual difference in the frame?
A pop-up frame is a single scissor-action unit. Every leg and roof strut is pinned together at the factory, which is what makes it fast and also what limits how big it can be. Our frames are separate poles joined by connectors, so the structure can span far more than any scissor frame. The 6x6m uses 38mm steel poles and the frame alone weighs 78kg. The 12x6m is 38mm powder-coated steel with a 1.0mm wall thickness. The 12x7m is heavy-duty galvanised steel with two zip-up end doors and a side door. The 10x5m is the one aluminium frame in the range, lighter to carry at a higher price.
Fabric: does gsm matter?
Yes, and it is the number pop-up listings rarely print. Our 12x6m and 12x7m roofs are 160g/m² polyethylene, UV treated and water resistant, with 140g/m² walls. The 8x4m roof is 140gsm PE. On the 6x6m the roof overlaps the walls by roughly 10cm so rain runs clear of the join. None of this makes a marquee a permanent structure: they are built for repeated event use, not for standing through a full storm season. If you need something up for months, look at a commercial PVC structure.
How do they handle wind?
Neither is safe in strong wind. The difference is how much margin you have. A pop-up has a light frame, a small footprint and often no walls, so it lifts easily. A frame marquee has more weight in it and walls that can be closed, which helps in a breeze, but a 72m² roof is also a 72m² sail. The rule is the same for both: weight every leg, about 15 to 20kg per leg on a sheltered site and 20 to 30kg or more on an exposed or coastal one, take the walls off when it gets gusty, and take the whole thing down when gusts above about 40 km/h are forecast, or ahead of any storm warning. How many guests fit?
A 3x3m pop-up covers the same 9m² as our 3x3m marquee, so about 10 standing or 8 seated. Our 3x3m frame marquee holds up to 10 standing or 8 dining with its three walls on. From there: 6x3m up to 30 standing or 12 dining, 9x3m 45 or 18, 8x4m 50 or 20, 6x6m 60 or 24, 10x5m 80 or 33, 12x6m 120 or 48, and the 12x7m 140 standing or 56 dining. What do they cost?
Retail pop-ups from the big-box brands were $249 to $269 for a 3x3m and $305 to $359 for a 6x3m when we checked in October 2026. Commercial-grade pop-ups start around $495 for a steel 3x3m and reach $1,495 for an aluminium 6x3m. Our frame marquees run from $199 for the 3x3m to $2,299 for the 12x7m, with walls included at every size.
