Those numbers are based on the room each guest actually needs: about 0.6m² standing, 0.9m² seated in rows and 1.5m² for a sit-down meal. Add roughly 25% on top if you also want a dance floor, a bar or a buffet table under cover.
6x3m, the backyard all-rounder
The 6x3m is the size most people actually need and don't realise it. At 18m² it covers a backyard birthday, a long table of 10-12 for a sit-down lunch, or a crowd of up to 30 mingling with drinks. It's light enough for two people to set up, and small enough to store in the shed without it taking over. 9x3m, the step up for proper parties
The 9x3m is the one to pick when "a few people over" turns into "a proper party." That extra 3m of length takes you from ~12 diners to ~18, or up to 45 standing, enough for an engagement do, a milestone birthday, or a market stall with room to move. It's the natural choice if the 6x3m feels like it'll be a squeeze on your busiest day, without jumping to a much bigger footprint.
6x6m, maximum cover, one marquee
The 6x6m marquee ($949) is for when you genuinely need to get a crowd under cover. At 36m² it seats around 24 for dinner, 40 in rows, or handles up to 60 standing, community events, big family Christmases, club functions or an engagement party, all in one fully enclosed square room.
How to choose between them
- Count your biggest day, then size up. If you're regularly on the line between two sizes, the larger one is the one you won't regret.
- Dining needs far more room than standing. A 6x3m fits ~30 standing but only ~12 at tables, if it's always sit-down meals, jump a size.
- Weather changes the maths. If rain could push everyone under cover at once, plan for everyone seated, not just the standing number.
