Buy vs Hire a Wedding Marquee in Australia: Real 2026 Costs
Buying a wedding marquee is cheaper than hiring by the second or third event: a 10x5m costs $1,599 to own, while 10x5m to 12x6m hire was advertised at $600 to $1,900 a booking, middle about $1,040. Brisbane Marquee Sales sells that 10x5m (50m², about 33 seated at dinner or 80 standing) with free delivery to most of Australia. Those hire rates were checked on 8 October 2026. For a single wedding, hire usually costs less and may include setup and pack-down, which owners do themselves.
In our 25 August 2026 check, a basic 10x5m frame marquee was advertised for hire at $660 plus delivery, and a 10x5m clear-span with delivery and setup at $1,900, while the BMS 10x5m costs $1,599 to own. Buying usually wins from the second or third use; hiring wins for a true one-off with professional setup.
If you need a marquee for one wedding, hiring can be the lower-hassle choice. If you will use it again for birthdays, family events or community functions, buying can become the better-value option after roughly two to three uses. The honest answer depends on the structure, delivery, setup, storage and how often you will reuse it.
The short answer
- Hire when the wedding is genuinely one-off, you need professional installation, or you have nowhere dry to store a marquee.
- Buy when you can self-install and store it, want control over setup timing, or expect two or more future events.
- Compare like with like. A self-installed PE marquee is not the same product as a professionally installed clear-span structure with flooring, lighting and furniture.

When does buying break even?
For the 10x5m BMS wedding marquee at $1,599, buying costs more than one basic $660 hire before delivery. Against the $880 package, buying passes the two-hire total of $1,760. Against the $1,900 clear-span example, buying costs less than one advertised hire, but you take on setup, pack-down and storage yourself.
The practical break-even point is usually two to three uses, not automatically the first event. Buying becomes stronger when you already have suitable storage, a setup team and future family or community events. Hiring remains sensible when professional installation and removal are worth more to you than ownership.
Australian delivery timing
Brisbane Marquee Sales dispatches most orders from an Australian warehouse in approximately 2 business days. Estimated carrier time after dispatch is 1 to 3 business days for Brisbane and South East Queensland, 3 to 6 for regional Queensland, Sydney, Canberra and regional New South Wales, 4 to 7 for Victoria, 5 to 8 for South Australia, and 7 to 10 for Perth, Hobart and Darwin. Remote addresses take longer.
For a fixed wedding date, allow a buffer for carrier delays and a practice setup. Do not leave an online purchase until the final week. See the current delivery information, or email support@brisbanemarqueesales.com.au before ordering if the date is close.
Weather and wind ratings in Australia
Do not assume every temporary marquee has the same wind rating. A rating must come from the exact product instructions or engineering documents. The current BMS product pages do not state an engineered wind rating, so we do not invent one.
Anchor every leg and follow the supplied instructions. Check the forecast before setup and never leave a temporary marquee standing through serious weather. The Bureau of Meteorology classifies damaging wind gusts as 90 km/h or more and destructive gusts as 125 km/h or higher. Those warning thresholds are not product ratings. A marquee should be dismantled well before conditions approach a severe weather warning.
What size should you buy?
- 6x3m, 18m²: a compact shelter for a small backyard event, around 12 dining guests.
- 9x3m, 27m²: around 18 dining guests, or useful as a separate ceremony, bar or food area.
- 8x4m, 32m²: around 20 dining guests or up to 50 standing, fully enclosed.
- 6x6m, 36m²: around 24 dining guests. This BMS size is fully enclosed, with side walls included.
- 10x5m, 50m²: around 33 dining guests or up to 80 standing, with window walls included.
- 12x6m, 72m²: around 48 dining guests, fully enclosed, for a larger reception under one roof.
- 12x7m, 84m²: around 56 dining guests, fully enclosed, our biggest single marquee.
Add more space for a dance floor, buffet, bar, gift table and circulation. Use the marquee size calculator before deciding.
Common questions
Is it cheaper to buy or hire a wedding marquee in Australia?
For one simple event, hiring can cost less and may include setup. Buying usually becomes better value after roughly two to three uses, depending on the hire package, delivery, setup and storage. Compare the complete quote, not only the advertised marquee price.
How much does a wedding marquee cost to buy?
Current Brisbane Marquee Sales prices range from $199 AUD for a 3x3m marquee to $2,299 AUD for a 12x7m marquee, with the 10x5m wedding marquee at $1,599 and the 12x6m at $1,899. Every size except the 6x6m, 8x4m, 12x6m and 12x7m (pre-orders, shipping end of November 2026) is dispatched in about 2 business days, with free delivery on most sizes. See the full size and price comparison.
Does Brisbane Marquee Sales offer wedding marquee hire?
No. Brisbane Marquee Sales is a retailer. We sell marquees for customers to own and reuse, and we do not provide hire, setup or pack-down services.
What wind rating should a wedding marquee have?
Use only a rating stated in the exact product instructions or engineering documents. No universal rating applies to every temporary marquee. Anchor every leg, monitor Bureau of Meteorology warnings and dismantle the structure before serious weather.
How early should I buy a marquee before a wedding?
Allow the dispatch and carrier windows, then leave enough time for a complete practice setup. For Queensland, the normal estimate is about 2 business days to dispatch plus 1 to 3 business days in transit for South East Queensland, or 3 to 6 for regional Queensland. Interstate delivery can take longer, so order well ahead of the event date.
The buying decision
Buy when ownership, repeat use and control are the priority. Hire when professional setup, one-off use and no storage are the priority. If buying is the right fit, compare the current marquee range and choose by seated guest capacity, included walls and setup requirements.
