Portable carports in Brisbane: the short answer

A portable carport is a steel frame with a fabric roof that two people can put up in about half an hour, move when you move, and take the roof off before a storm. Ours is a heavy duty galvanised carport in two sizes, 4.5x3m for $440 and 6x3m for $470, with free delivery to every Australian state and territory.

Size Footprint Best for Price
4.5x3m 4.57m x 3.05m, about 13.9m² One car, a trailer, a ride-on mower or a small boat $440
6x3m 6.05m x 3.05m, about 18.5m² A dual cab ute or 4WD with room to walk around it, a boat on its trailer, or a work bay $470

Both sizes have a galvanised steel frame, a white double coated PE roof that is UV treated and water resistant, two leg heights (peak 2.8m or 2.99m), and an anchor kit with 3 steel wind cables, ground stakes and guy ropes.

Will my car, ute or 4WD fit?

Clearance at the sides is about 2m on the low leg setting and the roof rises to a 2.8m or 2.99m peak in the middle. Most cars, SUVs and utes fit. A ute with a tall canopy or a loaded roof rack, a caravan, a motorhome or a high roof van may not, so measure your vehicle before you order.

Will a portable carport survive a Brisbane storm?

Only if it is anchored properly and the roof comes off when a storm is coming. On grass, stake every foot and tension the 3 steel cables and the guy ropes. On concrete or pavers, bolt the steel foot plates down with masonry anchors or add heavy weights to every leg. Before a forecast storm, strong wind or a cyclone warning, take the roof cover off: a fabric roof catches wind like a sail. A portable carport is a shelter, not a cyclone rated building.

Do I need council approval for a carport in Brisbane?

Brisbane City Council treats a carport on a house block as building work that generally needs approval from a building certifier. A portable carport is sold as a temporary shelter, but if you plan to leave it up long term, check with Brisbane City Council or a private certifier first. Other councils, especially in cyclone regions, set their own rules.

Portable or permanent carport?

  • Portable: from $440, no footings or builder, up in about half an hour, comes with you when you move. Good for renters, short term cover, work sites and storage.
  • Permanent: a builder, concrete footings and usually council approval. Better if you want cover that stays up through every storm.

Galvanised frame and PE roof: what that means

Galvanised steel has a zinc coating that resists rust better than plain painted steel, which matters in humid Queensland summers and near the coast. The PE (polyethylene) roof is double coated, UV treated and water resistant, so it sheds normal rain. It is not a sealed roof, and it should come off before severe weather.

Before you order a portable carport

Check your postcode and timing on the delivery page. A carport on a slab or pavers needs anchoring, see anchoring on concrete or pavers, and in exposed spots read wind limits and how to weigh a cover down. In Queensland, the storm season rules apply too. Looking for event cover instead? See the marquee range.
