How to Weigh Down a Gazebo or Marquee in Wind (Australian Guide)

Knowing how to weigh down a gazebo is the difference between a setup that holds and one that ends up across the yard. A gust under an unsecured gazebo turns it into a kite — and a hazard. Australian conditions (southerly busters, coastal gusts, summer storms) make this non-negotiable. Here's how to anchor a gazebo or marquee properly so it stays put.

The four ways to secure it (use more than one)

  1. Pegs & guy ropes — your first line on grass or soil. Drive pegs in at ~45°, away from the frame, and tension the ropes. Comes standard with our marquees.
  2. Leg weights / sandbags — essential on hard ground (concrete, pavers, decking) where pegs won't go. Aim for ~15–20kg per leg minimum for a pop-up; more for bigger marquees and exposed sites.
  3. Ratchet straps to fixed points — anchor to a fence, vehicle or ground stakes for extra hold in strong wind.
  4. Star pickets / ground anchors — for longer events or windier sites, hammered-in anchors hold far better than short pegs.

How much weight do you actually need?

Conditions Per-leg weight (guide)
Calm, short use, pegged on grass Pegs + ropes may be enough
Hard ground / general use ~15–20kg per leg
Exposed / coastal / gusty ~20–30kg+ per leg, plus straps

Smart habits

  • Close the walls in wind — open walls catch less than you'd think; a fully enclosed marquee handles gusts better than one with one side flapping open. (All our marquees have removable walls.)
  • Don't leave it up unattended in a storm. If a real blow is coming, drop the walls or take it down.
  • Check tension during the event — ropes loosen as the day warms.

What we recommend

For grass, the pegs and guy ropes that come with our 3x6 marquee are your start. For hard ground or anything breezy, add proper leg weights or sandbags on every leg. Buy your own setup once and you can dial in the anchoring for your exact spot, every time you put it up. Not sure which size suits your space?
